Ethical Policy

Many of us are now aware of the damage that global corporate capitalism has caused not only to the environment but also to human communities.

Sadly, even well-meaning attempts to “modernize” third world economies have often exacerbated the problem, by failing to take into account existing traditional systems of land ownership, food production, and kinship networks of shared labour and support.

Women and children have often borne the brunt of these negative impacts.

The ethos of “fair trade, not aid”, attempts to redress these imbalances by giving those in impoverished communities, such as women’s cooperatives, access to means of production and marketing as an outlet for their skills. In turn this provides not only a fair living wage but also independence and self-esteem.

Muirneag is committed to these principles:

  • Working to ensure materials in all our products are sustainably harvested/obtained—good for the environment!
  • Making sure our producers and suppliers receive fair payment for their work—good for the conscience!
  • Working to avoid use of toxic paints, dyes or other damaging materials, and recycling materials where possible—good for human health!
  • Working where possible to create employment by establishing women’s cooperatives or youth training schemes—good for families!
  • Bringing beauty into your home through original handcrafted works that reflect the artists’ creativity—good for the soul!
